Ocean City, MD The Maryland District of the Eastern Surfing Association held it's second event of it's 2003 Summer Surf Series this past weekend, May 31, at 47th Street in Ocean City, MD. Despite chilly on-shore southeast breezes, cloudy skies, small choppy surf and water temperatures in the low 50's, the determined competitors paddled out in their heats and made the best of the conditions. The surf did improve in size as the tide dropped, but did not come up enough to run the Open Shortboard division, which was cancelled and shortened the event to let everyone get off the beach before the late afternoon thunderstorms.

Stand-outs at the event included the Menehune Shortboard division, featuring three "mini-groms" Anthony Montague, 8, Noah Vaxmonsky, 7, and Ben Vaxmonsky, 5, surfing their very first contest with Ben winning the division, Anthony taking a close second and Noah taking third place.

The Boys Shortboard Division for the 2003 season has seen a complete change over of competitors with most of the 2002 Boys competitors moving up in to Juniors and last year's top ranked Taylor Ballard and Logan Helmuth now challenged by newcomers Waldon Remington, Vince Boulanger, and Roy Harrell.

The Mens Division, ages 18-24, has become one of the most hotly contested divisions for the MD ESA 2003 season, with Ocean City's Ted Smith and Jess Baunhofer chased for points by Chincoteague, VA powerhouses Kevin Daisey and Gaitey Dawkins. With newcomers Adam Antes and Todd Wolfe also providing a challenge, the ESA Summer Surf Series division promises to be one of the most exciting to watch this summer.

The next Maryland ESA surf contest will be June 14 at 34th Street in Ocean City, MD. For photos of the Saturday, May 31 contest go to www.marylandesa.org.
