3RD ANNUAL SURFER GIRL AND GUY "BEGINNER BEACHFEST"
Each of the past three summers Surfer Girl and Guy Surf Shop in Ocean City,
Maryland in cooperation with the Maryland District of the Eastern Surfing Association
has sponsored a specialty surfing event designed to introduce novice and younger
surfers to competition. This year's event, held Saturday, August 9th at 72nd
street in Ocean City, featured challenging conditions for surfers and spectators
alike. Intermittent rain showers tested parental resolve and the 3'-4' surf
and sweeping current tested the surfers.
All ages wound up coping with the difficult conditions extraordinarily well. Even the youngest competitors charged the waves, even though for some of the smallest competitors, the waves were well overhead. Boards and bodies survived intact and the kids and their parents exhibited a tremendous level of stoke throughout the long day's competition.
Prizes for the event were supplied by Surfer Girl and Guy surfshop, Oakley, Freestyle, and Billabong.
The next and final competition of the Eastern Surfing Association's Maryland District 2003 competition season will be the Maryland State Surfing Championships scheduled for Saturday August 30 at 47th St. in Ocean City, Md. Visit www.MarylansESA.org for events, news, surfing links and more than 4,000 surfing images from local contests.
