MD SURFER ERIC KURZBARD TAKES QUIET STORM DELAWARE STATE SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Unbeatable in almost every division he competed in, Eric Kurzbard of Ocean City, Maryland walked away with the title of Delaware State Surfing Champion, 3 first place trophies and a $350 Quiet Storm Surf Shop gift certificate during the Quiet Storm Delaware State Surfing Championships on Saturday, June 4. Nearly 100 surfers from Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey met at North Side Indian River Inlet to compete for $1,100 in Quiet Storm gift certificates and state titles at the annual championship event. Clean, waist to shoulder-high surf pumped in throughout the day for some of the best surfers in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Along with the 21 regular points divisions there were 4 open events that determined the state champion for shortboard, longboard, bodyboard and womens shortbaord. ESA East Coast Surfing Championship finalist, Ted Smith of Ocean City, Maryland won the open longboard division while ESA East Coast Surfing Champion Jake Buchler of Frankford, Delaware took the bodyboard title. Jenna Ruppert of Selbyville, Delaware beat former ESA All-Star Jenn Abrams of Seaford, Delaware for the womens title.

During the 13 hour event, non-competitors were able to catch quality surf next to the competition area while everyone on the beach was treated to free pizza provided by the ESA and it's new sponsor Nicola Pizza of Rehoboth Beach.

Eight of the Delmarva district surfers that were competing in the Delaware States have qualified to compete in the USA Surfing Championships in Huntington Beach, California on June 27 through July 2. Ted Smith, Wyatt Harrison, Vince Boulanger, Mike Lawson, Jenn Abrams, Ali Faucher, Chris Makibbin and Jake Buchler have all received slots while Clifton Rogers and Taylor Ballard have received alternate slots. Most of these surfers have accepted the invite and will be travelling to California to represent our region at this exclusive event.

The next scheduled event for the Delmarva district of the ESA is the Saltwater Cowgirl Wahine Contest on June 18 at North Side Indian River Inlet. This is a regular points event for women and girls divisions only. There will also be special divisions for beginner women and girl surfers that have never competed before.
