VIRGINIA BEACH SURFER BRAD HARRELL WINS TRIP TO HAWAII AT 7TH ANNUAL K-COAST OPEN

More than 100 of the best surfers from South Carolina through New Jersey traveled to Ocean City, Maryland to compete for five-thousand dollars in prizes and to help raise money for the Ocean City Career Firefighters and Paramedics Association in the 7th Annual K-Coast Open Surf Shootout on Saturday, October 15, 2005. A week-long Nor'easter generated a solid overhead swell just in time for the wind to switch offshore and produce incredible grinding barrels for the Mid-Atlantic's top surfing competitors.

The grand prize of a $1000 airline voucher went to first place Open Shortboard competitor Brad Harrell of Virginia Beach, VA. In a close final heat, Harrell squeaked by 2nd place finisher Robby Remson of Surfside Beach, SC by scoring some of the best barrels of the day.

The Grom division (ages 14 and under) went to returning champion Cole Richards of Garden City, SC followed by an outstanding performance by Joey Boulanger of Ocean City, MD. Third place finisher, Jake Buchler, of Frankford, DE, surfed back-to-back heats and then back-to-back finals to also place 6th in the Open Shortboard final. Terry Green of Myrtle Beach, SC and Laura Parks of Murrells Inlet, SC out-surfed the local competition for 1st and 2nd place, respectively, in the Girls division; while the Silvagni brothers of Kure Beach, NC dominated the Open Longboard division.

The day-long surf off concluded with an awards ceremony with free food for all competitors at Fish Tales in Ocean City. All 6 finalists from each division won huge prize packages from dozens of surf company sponsors and custom trophies by local artist Patti B. The main sponsors of the event were K-Coast Surf Shop, Hurley, X106.9 and the Eastern Surfing Association. The K-Coast Open raised approximately $2,500 for the Ocean City Career Firefighters and Paramedics Association.

The next scheduled event for the Delmarva District of the Eastern Surfing Association is the 2005 Sea Witch Surf Fest on October 29 in Delaware at the Tower Road State Park in Dewey Beach or North Side Indian River Inlet.
