OCEAN CITY, MD --May 15, 2005-- Delmarva surfers scored big with 7 first place finishes and 24 finalists at the 22nd Annual Mid-Atlantic Region Surfing Championships. The Delmarva District of the Eastern Surfing Association hosted this championship event on May 13-15 at 37th Street in Ocean City, Maryland. More than 400 of the best surfers from Georgia through Delaware came to Ocean City to compete for invitations to the 2005 Eastern Surfing Championships (The Easterns) in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and the USA Surfing Championships to be held this June in Huntington Beach, California.

The ESA Mid-Atlantic Regionals is one of the largest surfing events on the entire East Coast. Two simultaneous beaches with separate panels of professional surfing judges allowed this competition with 512 individual slots to be compressed into just three days. An event of this size for the non-profit ESA group would not have been possible without the local sponsorship support of Quiet Storm Surf Shops in Rehoboth Beach and Lewes along with Atlantic/Smith Cropper and Deeley Insurance Brokers, Silver Girl Jewelry and many other local businesses.

The Delmarva District is now becoming one of the largest and strongest surfing districts on the East Coast. The big wins for Delmarva came with first place finishes from Wyatt Harrison, Eric Kurzbard, Chris Vaxmonsky, Jenn Abrams, Taylor Ballard and Jake Buchler. The Delmarva district also had the oldest competitor in the event, 80-year-old Mort Stimler of Rockville, Md. who took home a first place trophy in the Grand Legends division. There were a total of 24 Delmarva competitors that advanced to the finals and many more that have now qualified to compete in the 2005 Eastern Surfing Championships.
