Sixty-five surfers were treated to almost perfect head-high surf Sunday morning at 37th Street for the first contest of the Eastern Surfing Association Delmarva District's 2005 competition season. As the day progressed, competitors had to battle strong side-shore winds and more challenging conditions. The cold wind-blown surf didn't stop surfers from earning points in 23 divisions.

Points from this first event will be added to points from the remaining 7 scheduled Delmarva ESA events throughout the competition season. The surfers in each division with the most points at the end of the season will get an invitation to compete in the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Regional Surfing Championships. The amount of invites in each age division depends on the percentage of members the Delmarva district has in relation to the 7 other districts in the Mid-Atlantic region.

May 13-15 - Mid-Atlantic Regional Surfing Championships - 37th Street in Ocean City
The following events are open to any Delmarva ESA member. Any surfer can become a member at the contest site.
June 4-5 - Delaware State Surfing Championships - North Side Indian River Inlet (check website or info line for final location)
June 18 - K-Coast Open - 78th Street in Ocean City
July 16-17 - Malibu's Classic - 8th Street in Ocean City
July 30-31 - Surfer Girl/Guy Beachfest - 72nd Street in Ocean City
August 13-14 - Maryland State Surfing Championships - Ocean City Inlet
October 15 - Delmarva ESA contest #6 - North Side Indian River Inlet (check website or info line for final location)
October 29 - Delmarva ESA contest #7 - Chincoteague, VA (check website or info line for final location)

Each year the Regionals is hosted by a different ESA district. This year the Delmarva district is the host district for the 2005 Mid-Atlantic Regional Surfing Championships. The Regionals is one of the largest surfing events of the entire East Coast. More than 400 of the best surfers from Georgia through Delaware will be traveling to 37th Street in Ocean City on May 13 through 15. The Regionals is a qualifying event for the 2005 Eastern Surfing Championships (The Easterns) and the USA Surfing Championships to be held this June in Huntington Beach, California.
