FEMALE SURFERS COMPETE FOR $1,000 IN PRIZES DURING THE SALTWATER COWGIRL ESA WAHINE CONTEST
Saltwater Cowgirl Surf Shop in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware hosted the first Delmarva Eastern Surfing Association event exclusively for Girls and Women at North Side Indian River Inlet on Saturday, June 18. Approximately 30 surfers from Maryland and Delaware competed for $1,000 in prizes from Saltwater Cowgirl Surf Shop. All six regular ESA girls and womens surfing divisions were run along with a special beginner's division for surfers that have never won an event before. Surfers were treated to consistent waist-high surf and once again free Nicola pizza during a perfect beach day at the Delaware State Park's surfing area.
Many first time female competitors came to the Saltwater Cowgirl Wahine contest to compete and join the Eastern Surfing Association. Kaitlyn Curran of Whitehaven, Maryland surfed her way into first place in the Beginner's Open division and took the top prize of a new 7' 10" fun-shape surfboard. New ESA member and Saltwater Cowgirl owner Robin Erthal upset the Senior Womens division ranking with a first place finish. Later this Summer, Erthal will be starting a Saltwater Cowgirl Surf Club for girls and women. For more info on the surf club contact Saltwater Cowgirl at 146 Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach, 302-227-1917.
In another crowd pleasing, specialty division, 7 male surfers competed for prizes dressed as girls. Dave "Big Wave Dave" Fishell of Fenwick Island, Delaware came to ham it up and took top honors as Most Outrageously Dressed. Cross dressed Ocean City, Maryland surfer Chris Makibbin used his cross stepping longboard walk to win the Surfs Like a Girl (Best Surfer) award. 10-year-old Brad Flora of Phoenix, Maryland had his hair in pony tails and wore a small bikini top to win the Looks Like a Girl award.
"Surfs Like a Girl" Longboarder Chris Makibbin and 5 other Delmarva district surfers are representing the East Coast in the USA Surfing Championships in Huntington Beach, California, June 27 through July 2. Ted Smith, Wyatt Harrison, Vince Boulanger, Mike Lawson and Clifton Rogers along with Chris Makibbin have all travelled to California to compete in this exclusive, invite-only event.
The next scheduled event for the Delmarva district of the ESA is the 11th Annual Malibus Classic scheduled for July 16 and 17 at 8th Street in Ocean City, Maryland.
