CLIFTON ROGERS TAKES THE OPEN DIVISION IN DELMARVA ESA'S FIRST 2006 CONTEST

The Delmarva District of the Eastern Surfing Association held it's first contest of the 2006/2007 competition season on Sunday, April 23. With the ocean water temperature warming up to the mid 50's, surfers were able to wear lighter wetsuits to battle it out at the Ocean City inlet jetty. 125 competitors from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia had to deal with extremely challenging waves. A solid head-high east swell combined with a building south swell created hard-breaking, closed-out surf, but that didn't stop the region's best surfers.

Clifton Rogers of Ocean City, Maryland dominated the Open Shortboard division with his aerials and barrel rides just beating out Ian Tilghman and Vince Boulanger, both of Ocean City, Maryland. Vince Boulanger also placed first in Junior Mens while Ted Smith of Ocean City, Maryland took first in Mens Shortboard. Other shortboard winners were: Dallas Harrington of Ocean City, Maryland; Rachel Harrell of Ocean View, Delaware; Caleb Buchler of Roxanna, Delaware; Caitlin Curran of Ocean City, Maryland; Brandi Zirkel of Ocean City, Maryland; Chris Makibbin of Ocean City, Maryland; Art Baltrotsky of Berlin, Maryland and Bill Helmuth of Ocean Pines, Maryland.

The heavy conditions made it even more challenging for the longboard divisions. Amazingly only one longboard succumbed to the board-breaking surf. Craig Garfield of Ocean City, Maryland broke his brand new, not to mention borrowed, Walden long board perfectly in two after his first wave in the Masters Longboard final. Longboard division champs were: Logan Helmuth of Ocean Pines, Maryland; Wyatt Harrison of Ocean City, Maryland; Kate Bassett of Berlin, Maryland; Art Baltrotsky of Berlin, Maryland and Bill Helmuth of Ocean Pines, Maryland.

Grinding barrels made it perfect for the bodyboard divisions with Mike Lawson of Ocean Pines, Maryland and Caleb Buchler of Roxanna, Delaware placing first respectively in the Open and Menehune Bodyboard divisions.
