NEW JERSEY SURFER WINS DELAWARE STATE SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Brian Williams of Williamstown, NJ won the Quiet Storm Delaware State Surfing Champion title at the 2006 Quiet Storm Delaware State Surfing Championships, Saturday, June 3. Williams received a $200 Quiet Storm Surf Shop gift certificate as his prize and also took the Mens Shortboard division title. Nearly 100 surfers from Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey met at the Delaware Seashore Tower Road beach to compete for state titles and $1,200 in prizes from Quiet Storm Surf Shops in Rehoboth Beach and Lewes at the annual championship event. Waist-high surf dampened by downpours lasted throughout the day, but the rain couldn't stop some of the best surfers in the Mid-Atlantic region during the 13-hour event. Competitors and spectators on the beach were all treated to free Nicola pizza in between the downpours.

Along with the 21 regular age divisions there were 4 open events that determined the state champion for shortboard, longboard, bodyboard and womens shortboard. Art Baltrotsky of Berlin, Maryland won the open longboard division while Jake Buchler of Frankford, Delaware once again took the bodyboard title. Kaitlyn Curran of Ocean City, Md. upset the defending champ, Jenna Ruppert of Selbyville, Delaware for the Womens title.

Quiet Storm Surf Shop in Rehoboth Beach also donated a new 7S fish surfboard to be given away to one lucky competitor in a drawing at the end of the event. Thirteen-year-old Colton Clazey of Chestertown, Md. turned out to be the lucky competitor.

The next Delmarva ESA event is the 2nd Annual Wahine Contest on June 17 at North Side Indian River Inlet or the Tower Road State Park just south of Dewey Beach. This is a regular points event for women and girls divisions only. There will also be special divisions for beginner women and girl surfers that have never competed before.
