Dane Wooleyhan of Millsboro, DE wins the Sea Witch Surf Fest

DEWEY BEACH, DE. - The Delmarva District of the Eastern Surfing Association held its final contest of the 2006/2007 competition season, the Sea Witch Surf Fest, at Tower Road State Park in Dewey Beach, Delaware, Sunday, October 29, 2006. More than 100 competitors from the entire Mid-Atlantic region traveled to surf in this annual Halloween event.

Strong offshore winds groomed the knee-high surf into perfect little peelers for the nine costume clad surfers in the special Halloween divsion. A Ninja Turtle, Power Ranger, shark, two witches and various other costumed surfers all braved the chilly water to display their best moves. The two witches, Kate Bassett of Berlin, Maryland and Chelsea Remines, also of Berlin, Maryland ended up in a three way tie for first place with Andrew Stewart of Ocean City, Maryland, A.K.A. Captain Underpants. Captain Underpants wooed the judges when he mooned them as he pulled his underpants down while he was riding a wave. Luckily, he was still wearing a wetsuit below his underwear.

The three largest divisions were Junior Shortboard (ages 15-17), Boys Shortboard (ages 12-14) and Open Shortboard (all ages). The Junior Shortboard final ended in an extremely close finish for first through third with Roy Harrell of Ocean View, Delaware just edging out Joey Boulanger of Ocean City, Maryland and Dane Wooleyhan of Millsboro, Delaware. Caleb Buchler of Fenwick Island, Delaware dominated his competition in the Boys Shortboard division and Dane Wooleyhan of Millsboro, Delaware really turned on in the last heat of the day which was the last Open division final of the year. Wooleyhan managed to find the best waves and just destroy them for a first place finish in the most competitive division.

Competitors were treated to Halloween candy all day and free Nicola pizza for lunch on the wind-blown beach. For more information about the Delmarva district of the Eastern Surfing Association, visit www.DelmarvaESA.org or call 410-641-3329.
