Press Release by White Whale Productions
OCEAN CITY – The Delmarva Eastern Surfing Association is in the middle of four consecutive competitions and Jasset Umbel is halfway to earning a “surf slam” after winning the Girl's Shortboard division at Malibu's Classic two weeks ago and Women's Open Shortboard at the 6th Annual Surfer Girl and Guy Beginner's Beach Fest last week.
She would need to out-surf the women at Saturday's Quiet Storm Wahine Surf-off in Delaware and then win the Maryland State Surfing Championships the following weekend in Ocean City to complete an ESA “grand slam.”
Not bad for a 12-year-old from Melbourne Beach, Fla., who, along with her parents (Ocean City natives Bob and Dorette Umbel) is visiting her grandparents in the resort for a few weeks.
“I was really surprised to win,” said Jasset after beating more experienced surfers at the Surfer Girl & Guy competition at 72 nd Street. “All the girls surfed really well.”
Jasset, who says she practices her moves while surfing everyday, performed more technical maneuvers in the final than the other surfers to take the title.
“I had some hard moves – some off the lips and cutbacks during the final,” she said. “It was very cool.”
Also having a very cool two weeks is Ocean City's Vince Boulanger who won the Open Shortboard divisions in the past two competitions. Boulanger will not be eligible to surf in the all female Quiet Storm Wahine Surf-off, but will be back in the water the following weekend at 48 th Street for the Maryland State Surfing Championships.
The contest, sponsored by the Surfer Girl & Guy surf shop, is not an ESA points event, but rather encourages beginners to compete with 10 novice divisions that range from shortboard to longboard to bodyboard. This year's event, according to Delmarva ESA District Director Art Baltrotsky, was the biggest ever.
“It was twice as big as last year and we had a ton of beginners, which is great because that's what it is all about,” he said.
